Ricky Tagaban's Gift Guide for Creative Tastemakers

Ricky Tagaban's Gift Guide for Creative Tastemakers

      Ricky Tagaban at Kindred Post

Our annual gift guides return! Each one is thoughtfully curated by a neighbor near you. We asked local artist Ricky Tagaban to give us a sense of what other creative tastemakers like him might enjoy! Ricky's gift guide is deeply rooted in a sense of place and includes shout outs to many other local artists, so we love how it demonstrates the way our creative community uses their own opportunities to lift up others. Perhaps the trendiest thing to an artist is supporting other artists? The gift that keeps on giving! We buy into this idea for sure.

KP: What do you do by day and what do you do by night?

RT: By day I weave with Lily Hope and by night I tiptoe in drag and weave by myself.

KP: What or who are you feeling most connected to lately?

RT: Probably Clarissa Rizal. Her legacy has been a driving force in my life for several years, but more and more I've been kind of dissecting or trying to dissect just how she did everything so boldly. I'm trying to figure out what my version of that will be. But she's the prototype for sure.

KP: What are you most looking forward to in 2020?

RT: Turning 30. Not being in my twenties anymore. I've made a loose list of goals for what I want to be habitual by the time I'm 30 and I'm starting that now. I loved my twenties (I still do), but I'm very much looking forward to my thirties.

Growing Upwords "I Love This Place" Card Set

"I love these because they come from *you* (Christy NaMee Eriksen). I have to stop myself from just standing at the shelf and reading all of them and wanting to cry. They're easy to share; what's on them are good prompts for what you might write in the card. I need prompts sometimes." - Ricky

Growing Upwords "I Love This Place" Card Set, $20.

      DAZI Necktie

"This tie will never go out of style. Also it's topographic so it seems to relate to where we're from in a really beautiful way. The pattern is small enough so it can kind of register as a solid - it's hella neutral and can go with evvvverything." - Ricky

      Dazi Topographic Necktie, $39.

Mack Provisions Recycled Baseball Glove Wallet

"I love these guys; I follow them on the instagram. I also think baseball is the sexiet sport. And recycling baseball gloves is even more sexy than playing baseball. :D" - Ricky

Vintage Baseball Glove Card Holder, $60.

      Daaljini & Roz Earrings

"These particular earrings by Roz and Mary are exciting because they are working on different combinations of this - they're the male and female reproductive parts of salmon and they're making different combos of male and male, female and female, etc. (Also they look like fake nails so we're collaborating on maybe making some formline fake nails)! They're always trying mew designs, they do a really good job of trying to be more thoughtful every time they create new bodies of work." - Ricky

Daaljini & Roz Spawning Salmon Copper Earrings, $70.

      Michaela Goade Crab Harvest Print

"Michaela is probably my favorite artist in southeast. She's so kind and she's so good at what she does, and it has just been really cool to watch her progress. Everything she makes is so relatable. Aside from being incredibly talented, she's a really good person in our community. I adore her." - Ricky

Michaela Goade "Crab Harvest" Print, $35.

      Mountain Men of Alaska Calendar

"I've always loved this calendar. They do a really good job of being inclusive; there's something for just about everyone. There's a lot of good humor and a lot of meaningful things, and who doesn't want burly mountain people? And not just burly, sometimes they're fragile, sometimes they're musical. There are all kinds of beautiful depictions of Alaskan folks." - Ricky

Mountain Men of Alaska 2020 Calendar, $22.

Mya's Gift Guide for Woke Teens

Mya's Gift Guide for Woke Teens

Our annual gift guides return! Each one is thoughtfully curated by a neighbor near you. We asked creative, conscious teen Mya Pecson to to pick gifts that she or someone like her would enjoy! We like how Mya's gift guide reflects a rich inner and outer life - goods that celebrate her family and social life, as well as items for peace and reflection. Check out her picks for a woke teen in your life!

KP: What do you do by day and what do you do by night?

MP: Sometimes I'm at school - either trying to learn or daydreaming. And at night I like to watch any shows that have been released, or I'm drawing or hanging out with my siblings or playing Minecraft with my cousin Diego.

KP: What or who are you feeling most connected to lately?

MP: Probably Nina because we just had a sleepover and she's my best friend and we talk all the time. We were talking about a lot of stuff and went shopping together, which is really nice since we don't see each other everyday anymore. But I feel more connected to her now even though we're more apart.

KP: What are you most looking forward to in 2020?

MP: New seasons to my favorite shows. And looking forward to trying to expand my art because I've been dabbling in a lot of things but havent gotten into others besides visual art and journals. I'd like to do more photography and a lot more writing. And I'm excited for my freshman year to end and for my sophomore year to start.

      My Neighbor Totoro Notebook

I really like to journal and I've been obsessed with Ghibli since I was very little, and Totoro is one of my favorites. And the felt cover makes it really nice to touch. -Mya

      My Neighbor Totoro Journal, $16.95.

It smells really good and I really like candles. Sometimes I turn all the lights off in my room and light a candle. It creates a peaceful atmosphere that you want to be in. Also, my mom always says my room stinks so the candle helps it smell better  - Mya

      Moonrise Sunset Candle, $26.

      Garnet Mini Energy Gems

In Steven Universe, Garnet is my favorite Gem. The red and gold is really pretty. Earrings are a good accessory for a small detail that can add a lot to your outfit. These are very simple and not extravagant so it can be paired up with a lot of stuff. - Mya

      Garnet Mini Energy Gems, $33.

      Compartes Matcha White Chocolate Bar

For one, the wrapper is really cool, and green tea chocolate is one of my favorite chocolate flavors. Who doesn't like chocolate? - Mya

Compartes Matcha White Chocolate Bar, $9.95.

      Lomo Automat Instant Camera 'Dahab'

Polaroids and pictures are really fun to take to events etc, to capture the moment and keep on your wall or in your journal. This camera is really nice, too, for photography artists to look at the world. It's nice for keeping memories to look back on. - Mya

Lomo Instant Automat Camera 'Dahab', $199.

"Other People's Sandwiches" Growing Upwords Print

This quote by Diego (my cousin) is very relatable. I'll bring my food to school and I'll look at everyone else's food and want to eat their food and it's the same for my friends and so we always trade! My auntie and uncle got this print, too. In our family we'll always be looking at each other's food, saying "are you gonna eat that?" Lol. And so it's a memory I connect with family. - Mya

Growing Upwords "Other People's Sandwiches" Print, $29.

Artist of the Week: Daaljíni and Roz

Artist of the Week: Daaljíni and Roz

" We enjoy seeing our work being worn with pride at many of the Native gatherings that we attend."

      Daaljini and Roz

Presenting our Kindred Artist of the Week series! We are big fans of all the artists we work with and we are so excited to share their stories!

This week we are featuring Daaljíni and Roz, indigenous wonder women of arts and culture in our town! We're grateful to these two for lending their talents all over our community through language and story and more. They live with intention and beauty, and it shows in their jewelry. We're proud to carry and lift up their work!

      Who are you?

Roz (Xʼeikaxdu.oo) Cruise is Lʼuknaxsháa from Yáay Hít in Gunaxóo (Dry Bay) and is Kaagwaantaan yádi.  Mary (Daaljíni or Xúxʼawdu.oo) is Kaagwaantaan from Gooch Hít in Tlákw Aan and is Lʼuknax.ádi yádi and Gaanaxteidí dachxán.

      What do you do?

We both reside in Juneau and work with copper and silver creating Northwest Coast, contemporary-style jewelry.

      Who/what inspires you?

Our inspiration comes from many sources, including the people who have helped us along the way.  We have had several teachers over the years, but we have really been inspired by the help and guidance of Maryʼs mother, Sue Folletti who was our first and most prominent teacher over the years.  We enjoy seeing our work being worn with pride at many of the Native gatherings that we attend.

What’s your favorite moment in the process?

Our favorite moment in the process is when we are able to actually find time to collaborate together or with others to bring new designs to life.

What’s a trick of your trade, or a piece of advice for other artists in your medium?

A trick of the trade, that we have discovered, is that there are many tricks to the trade.  Donʼt be afraid to try new things and to advance your process with tools that your predecessors did not have access to in the past.

      What’s next?

In the near future, we plan to have a website of our own that people can access either for individual purposes, or for wholesale orders.

See more of their work in person at Kindred Post!

Gigi Monroe's Gift Guide for Kings and Queens

Gigi Monroe's Gift Guide for Kings and Queens

      Gigi Monroe at Kindred Post

Our annual gift guides return! Each one is thoughtfully curated by a neighbor near you. We asked drag mother, performer, and community organizer extraordinaire Gigi Monroe to choose gifts for the kings and queens in our lives - as a head nod to the drag community but also to the royalty within us. Her gift guide offers inspiration, practical tools for the trade, and a celebration of joyful gender expression. We're so here for it! Check out Gigi's picks for star quality - inside and out.

KP: What do you do by day and what do you by night?

GM: I make wigs by day and produce drag shows by night. Sometimes I sleep.

KP: What or who are you feeling most connected to lately?

GM: I'm feeling most connected to the darkness here. It is an awesome time to reflect on life, especially the last year. What 2019 has been like, where I want to go in 2020. I think it's a good time for all of us to turn inward, take stock of what;s going on, where we want to go, and rest up for the sunshine to come back.

KP: What are you most looking forward to in 2020?

GM: A new president, lol. Also, I feel like there's a lot of stuff bubbling up in Juneau, especially downtown, and I'm excited to see what all of this entrepreneurial creative rabble rousing is going to produce. I see a lot of it right now and it's exciting to be a part of a community in transition, in flux.

      Seeing Gender Book

"'An illustrated guide to identity and expression.' What kings and queens do is show the world a new way to see gender. This is a really nice complement to the work that we do on stage - visually talk about what gender looks like, how to break it down, look at things differently, and challenge our assumptions." - Gigi Monroe

Seeing Gender: An Illustrated Guide to Identity and Expression, $27.50.

"Prince was a huge inspiration to me. As a gender performer, Prince was one of the originals out there, not just for his music but for what he did through his performance and fashion and how he interacted with the world. He really challenged and changed minds throughout the 70s. He's still an icon and what better way than to have him as an ornament." - Gigi Monroe

      Prince Ornament, $10.

"For the kings in your life: the Permafrost beard balm in woodchip whiskey. It has a very appealing scent and it's essential to making sure your facial hair is where you want it to be, not flying away. We like a nice full beard but we don't like it to be too unruly." - Gigi Monroe

      Permafrost Beard Balm, $16.

"For the queens: we love bling and jewelry. And we are so fortunate in this town to have amazing queer artists like Daaljini and Roz who hand create these patina copper earrings. They're bold and these really long angular pieces definitely make a statement - which is what being a queen is all about." - Gigi Monroe

Daaljini & Roz Long Angle Earrings, $45.

"Keeping things nice and fun and sexy. This is one of the best gifts to get anybody in the whole world. I get these for people every single year because it doesn't matter who you're into or what type of person you're into, everyone is into mountain men of Alaska. You can't deny it! It's a great gift especially for kings; a little inspiration / role models for their masculine creations." - Gigi Monroe

Mountain Men of Alaska Calendar, $22.

"This kit with all the different lenses, and most importantly the remote control - so you can be your own photographer. You can host your own fabulous photo shoot for your new promos for your shows as a king or queen or whatever you're doing. Marketing, social media, and photos are crucial as a king or queen. Whatever it takes - wide angle, fish eye lens, etc. You'll have the most sickening promo photos." - Gigi Monroe

The Automat Lomography Camera & Lens Pack, $179.

      MG: Being done moving!
