Artist of the Week: Daaljíni and Roz
Presenting our Kindred Artist of the Week series! We are big fans of all the artists we work with and we are so excited to share their stories!
This week we are featuring Daaljíni and Roz, indigenous wonder women of arts and culture in our town! We're grateful to these two for lending their talents all over our community through language and story and more. They live with intention and beauty, and it shows in their jewelry. We're proud to carry and lift up their work!
Who are you?
Roz (Xʼeikaxdu.oo) Cruise is Lʼuknaxsháa from Yáay Hít in Gunaxóo (Dry Bay) and is Kaagwaantaan yádi. Mary (Daaljíni or Xúxʼawdu.oo) is Kaagwaantaan from Gooch Hít in Tlákw Aan and is Lʼuknax.ádi yádi and Gaanaxteidí dachxán.
What do you do?
Who/what inspires you?
Our inspiration comes from many sources, including the people who have helped us along the way. We have had several teachers over the years, but we have really been inspired by the help and guidance of Maryʼs mother, Sue Folletti who was our first and most prominent teacher over the years. We enjoy seeing our work being worn with pride at many of the Native gatherings that we attend.
What’s your favorite moment in the process?
What’s a trick of your trade, or a piece of advice for other artists in your medium?
A trick of the trade, that we have discovered, is that there are many tricks to the trade. Donʼt be afraid to try new things and to advance your process with tools that your predecessors did not have access to in the past.
What’s next?
In the near future, we plan to have a website of our own that people can access either for individual purposes, or for wholesale orders.
See more of their work in person at Kindred Post!
