"They may be pretty, but they pack a toxic punch!
To all my Alaskan and Pacific Northwest foragers, hikers, nature lovers and outdoor explorers no matter your location around the world, I created this piece especially for you. Now you can enjoy the beauty of these toxic plants inside your home, without the harmful side effects!
I created this piece because I was continually surprised at how few of my friends around Alaska knew what baneberry was. It can be deadly! Inspired by this, I did some research and rounded up a few more toxic plants found around Alaska and the Pacific Northwest with the goal of creating a piece that could both delight and educate."
This is a print of an original painting done in gouache and watercolor.

Started illustrating her first book with sealaska in 2016, published three in 2017.Each book she is relying less and less on photoshop and her digital art, embracing new colors, textures and techniques like adding new mediums. She was originally inspired by the actions of the Standing Rock protesters in 2016 protecting their land from the pipeline, but says that We Are The Water Protectors is a generally Mother Earth based story. She tried to add as many different tribes, allies, nationalities as possible for the sake of unifying indiginous voices. In 2021, Michaela received the Caldecott award for We Are The Water Protectors.
