Inspired by days spent on the sea with family and friends, the smell of sharp salty air, and the thrill of pulling up crab pots.
The piece is a select spread from "Let's Go! A Harvest Story," a children's story written by Hannah Lindoff, illustrated by me, and published by Sealaska Heritage Institute in 2017.
Archival giclée print from an original watercolor and mixed media painting.
. . .
Started illustrating her first book with sealaska in 2016, published three in 2017.Each book she is relying less and less on photoshop and her digital art, embracing new colors, textures and techniques like adding new mediums. She was originally inspired by the actions of the Standing Rock protesters in 2016 protecting their land from the pipeline, but says that We Are The Water Protectors is a generally Mother Earth based story. She tried to add as many different tribes, allies, nationalities as possible for the sake of unifying indiginous voices. In 2021, Michaela received the Caldecott award for We Are The Water Protectors.
